Fashion Merchandising - News and Resources: Home

Welcome

Fashion Leads the Way at Box Hill Institute!

BOX HILL INSTITUTE'S recent research has identified FASHION as the top- selling consumer product bought using smartphones.

In response to those findings, Box Hill Institute has launched a new course that addresses new technologies within the fashion business.

Senior educator, Debbie Pratt, believes the institute’s new Bachelor of Fashion Merchandising addresses the rapidly changing retail landscape and associated purchasing behaviour.

“Successful fashion companies are engaging with customers through ‘omnichannel’ retailing, which is a mix of digital and physical experiences,” she says.

“This means there is a real need to address mobile technologies and purchasing behaviour within a fashion course.” Globally, digital retailing is headed towards 15 to 20 per cent of total sales but, interestingly, experts estimate that digital information influences about 50 per cent of store sales, with that number also growing rapidly, Pratt says.

“In fashion, it is not just about purchasing online, but about finding information on products and asking friends for their opinion. At the same time, retail stores are not going to go away. Research shows that physical stores boost online purchases," she says. The three-year Bachelor of Fashion Merchandising has four streams: Product Development, Traditional Merchandising, Digital Merchandising and Business.

The digital merchandising stream focuses on website development and social media with students required to create a virtual online fashion store.

“What is really important, is that it is still a bricks and mortar business,” Pratt says.

“That aspect is not going to go away, but fashion employees today need to be able to incorporate online technologies into their skill set, and to know the difference between merchandising for an online store versus a physical store. This course addresses that emerging skill set, and will ultimately make our graduates very employable in the fashion industry.” Pratt believes industry experience is equally important in gaining employment, so third-year students undertake a workplace internship to gain real industry experience in a fashion retail organisation.

“They also undertake a major industry project in consultation with a high-profile fashion retail brand,” she says.

“This project requires students to research, plan and develop a comprehensive merchandising solution; the real world experience will make them attractive to industry when they graduate.” Employment opportunities for graduates of the Bachelor of Fashion Merchandising include fashion buyer, merchandiser, visual merchandiser, product developer, retail manager, marketing assistant, or being self-employed by a fashion boutique or online retailer.

The course takes three years of full-time study and graduates have the option to proceed to a masters program.

Box Hill Institute is accepting applications for this course until the end of January. To apply through VTAC, change of preference applications are available, or, for direct entry, download an application form from boxhill.edu.au or call 1300 BOXHILL to arrange an interview.
