Guide for new users of the library: Borrowing

A guide to the libraries.

Specialist items available for loan

Toy library @ Elgar & Lilydale

A  toy collection primarily catering for students studying childrens' services.

Borrowing from other libraries

You are able to borrow in person from other TAFE and university libraries through the CAVAL Reciprocal Borrowing Program.

Interlibrary Loans bring items from other libraries to us for you to borrow.

Visit the Borrowing from other Libraries page or ask at the Library for more information.

Borrowing

Borrowing

Students at Box Hill Institute & CAE are automatically members of the library.

Your student ID card is your library card, and is required for borrowing.

Items can be borrowed from library staff or by using self check out.

You may borrow up to 10 items (15 for degree students) for:

  • 2 weeks – most books and periodicals
  • 1 week – most kits, IELTS material, and DVDs.

Access My Account in the Library catalogue to check due dates, renew items, and place or cancel holds.

To access your library account, you will need your student ID number and your PIN.

Returning Items

Items may be returned to any Box Hill Institute or CAE Campus library.

The after hours return chute at Elgar Campus library is located outside the library and is accessible when Building E3 is open.

Return or renew items by the due date to avoid overdue fines.

Renewing

Unlimited renewals are permitted unless a hold has been placed on the item, or you owe the library $20 or more, or have items 3 weeks past their due date.

Renew loans in person, over the phone, by email or online.

Holds

Place holds on items which are on loan or held at another Campus Library. You will be contacted by email when items are available for collection.

Late, Lost, & Damaged Items

Overdue items normally incur a fine of 30¢ per item per day.

It is the responsibility of the borrower to pay the cost of replacing lost or damaged items.

The Library allows you to accumulate $20 in fines before any payment is required. Once you owe $20 or more you are required to bring your balance below the limit. For example, if you owe $20.50 you will need to pay at least 51¢ to bring your balance below the $20 limit. (As well as return any outstanding items.)

If you owe $20 or more you will be blocked from any further borrowing, and your results may be withheld. Borrowing privileges will be restored, and results released, as soon as you get your balance below $20.

You pay fines with your student card. Credit can be added to your card using the print kiosks in the libraries.

More information is available on these StudentWeb pages: Overdue Resources and Lost or damaged resources and disputes.
