Music Industry: Library Resources

A library guide for Diploma of Music Industry (Business), Associate Degree in Applied Business (Music Industry), and Bachelor of Applied Business (Music Industry) students

Books on the shelf

The books for Music Industry aren't all on one shelf. The Dewey system for pigeonholing books in one place (so we can shelve them and you can find them) breaks your books into several runs.

Books on music as an industry are clustered at 338.4778.

Books on music copyright and law are in the range 346 - 348, but it's best to search the catalogue for an exact number.

Music in general is in the 780s, so a lot of books on jobs in the industry, and business and legal aspects of composing, performing, and recording, are found here.

Most of the books on general aspects of business, and office administration, will be at Elgar campus - BUT if you place a Hold on them, you can pick them up at Whitehorse within a day or two.

You can find a LibGuide on business management in general, at

Journals online

We subscribe to hundreds of journals! but they're online, not on the shelf. You'll find them under Publications on the Discovery catalogue

We recommend several databases for Music Industry.

EbscoHost has 4 that are useful.

It has

  • Business Source Premier
  • Australian and New Zealand Reference Centre
  • Vocational Studies Complete (good for working in the music industry, and some music trade statistics)
  • Academic Search Elite (a good general academic source)

Rock's BackPages is another database we subscribe to.

AustLII (available on the Web) is an excellent resource for Australian law and legal matters.

Trove (also available on the Web) is the ultimate resource for finding books in Australian libraries. If BHI doesn't have a book, look at Trove to find where you can go to get it. You can borrow from any University or TAFE in Victoria - We'll give you a CAVAL borrowers card before you go.
