Harvard Referencing (Australian Government Author-date style)

Box Hill Institute will be changing the Harvard Referencing style to the standard for Australian Government writing and editing in 2026.

Electronic Journal Article - One Author

In-text citation:

British educator Charlotte Mason strongly encouraged teachers to get out of the way of student learning, and allow students direct access to an author’s mind (Edwards 2025:123).

Reference List:

Author's surname Initials (Year in brackets) ‘Title of article’, Name of Journal in italics, volume number(issue number or month):page number–page number, doi:number

Example :

Edwards A (2025) 'Trusted together: a commognitive perspective on a primary source project in multivariable calculus', Mathematics Enthusiast, 22(1/2):123-147, doi:10.54870/1551-3440.1655

Note:

  • In this example, the work is volume 22, issue 1/2 and it's on pages 123 to 147.
  • doi = Digital Object Identifier. If a DOI number is available for the journal article it should be included as a replacement for the database name. If a doi is not available, and the item does not come from a database, include the URL of the article instead.
  • A physical journal or magazine article is referenced in the same style but without the DOI at the end.

Electronic Journal Article - More Than One Author

In-text citation:

For a work by 2 authors, include both names in the in-text citation.

For a work by 3 or more authors, use the first author’s name plus the Latin term ‘et al.’ (meaning ‘and others’). Don’t use italics for ‘et al.’. All authors’ names are included in the reference list.
