Harvard Referencing (Australian Government Author-date style)

Box Hill Institute will be changing the Harvard Referencing style to the standard for Australian Government writing and editing in 2026.

General rules for electronic media

Electronic media includes film, television, radio and podcasts. 

Italicise the titles of films, television and radio programs, and podcasts.

Place the names of episodes in quotation marks. 

Films

For scripted material, list as the author the first person named in the writing credits. 

In-text citation:

Glazer (2023) creates effective drama based on true events with unerring control of tonal and visual storytelling.

OR

Rudolf Höss lived with his wife Hedwig and their five children next to the Auschwitz concentration camp (Glazer 2023). 

Reference list:

Director D (director) or Producer P (producer) (Year) Title of film [motion picture], Name of Studio or Publisher, Place of Production.
 

Example:
Glazer J (director) (2023) The Zone of Interest [motion picture] A24, Poland.

Television Program

In-text citation:

Write the name of the program in italics while the episodes are in quotation marks. 

The Shogun episode 'Ladies of the Willow World' is an upswing for the women who have taken a back seat in this story.

Reference list:

Director D (director) or Producer P (producer) (Year) ‘Title of episode: subtitle of episode’ [television program], Name of series (season number, episode number), Name of Station or Studio, Place of Production.

Example:
Kamata H (director) (2024), 'Ladies of the Willow World' [television program], Shogun, (season 1, episode 6) Disney+, British Columbia. 

Podcast

In-text Citation

Use italics for the name of the program series and quotation marks for the names of individual podcast episodes.

In 'The Little World of African Violets' episode of Garden Clinic, Beverly Donsworth says that when African Violets were found in Tanzania in around 1892, they were just blue with 5 petals. 

Reference List 

Hyperlink the episode’s title if you played it from a webpage and include the date it was accessed at the end of the reference.

Host H (host) and Producer P (producer) (Day Month Year) ‘Title of podcast: subtitle of podcast’ [podcast], Name of podcast, Name of Podcast Network, accessed Day Month Year.

Example:

Ross L (host) and Ross G (producer) (13 July 2021) 'The Little World of African Violets' [podcast], Garden Clinic, accessed 25 January 2024. 

Radio Program

In-text Citation
Use italics for the titles of programs and enclose the names of individual episodes in single quotation marks.

In the episode 'Unemployment holds at 4.1 per cent' in the The World Today, Jordan Fennell stated that The Waitangi Treaty was signed in 1840 between the British Crown and more than 500 Maori chiefs.

Reference List

In a reference list, include the full date the episode went to air. Include the place of production if known.

Presenter P (presenter) (Day Month Year) ‘Title of episode: subtitle of episode’ [radio program], Name of program, Name of Station or Studio, Place of Production.

Example:

Sara S (presenter) (14 November 2024) 'Unemployment holds at 4.1 per cent' [radio program], The World Today, ABC Listen, Sydney, NSW.
